Shopkeeper Tricks Robber As He Tries To Steal From Him

A quick-thinking shopkeeper threw cash on the floor when confronted by a knife-wielding robber - then smacked him over the head with a baseball bat when he bent down to pick it up.

Brave Muhammad Atif, 45, was working by himself when a crazed thug entered the shop and threatened to stab him if he did not hand over cash on February 25.

The dad-of-four feared for his life and played for time by throwing the banknotes on the floor.

When Patrick Humphrey, 38, bent down to pick up the loot Muhammad hit him over the head with a baseball bat.

The bat broke just as Humphrey was making his escape.

Humphrey, 38, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for the armed robbery at Jazzy's Newsagent in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, last Friday.

And Muhammad has now gathered courage to speak out about the violent incident.

He said: "I never felt good, even for a second, when I was doing it. I felt sorry for him afterwards. I felt bad for him every day.

"But I feared for my life and instinctively did what I could to save myself. It was over before you knew it.

"He was waving around a bread knife and demanding cash so I tried to reason with him by telling him I was a father-of-four but he didn't stop asking.

"I couldn't find the baseball bat anywhere so had to stall for time by throwing some money on the floor for him to pick up.

"I whacked him over the head six or seven times and chased him out the door until my bat broke."

Humphrey had previously been sentenced to four years in jail following a masked raid on a petrol station.
